Governor Ron DeSantis is on a roll. Though coy about his future political ambitions, without announcing his candidacy, he has secured the endorsement of the richest man in the world, Elon Musk.
On Wednesday, Musk disclosed that he would like to see the outspoken, conservative Republican governor become the next president of the United States.
Few underestimate the powerful influence Musk wields. The potential owner of Twitter recently revealed he had backed the underdog Republican congressional candidate in south Texas. Amazingly, that candidate, Mayra Flores, flipped the second-largest Hispanic district in America from blue to red, making history in a special election on Tuesday night.
“I voted for Mayra Flores – first time I ever voted Republican,” Musk tweeted. “Massive red wave in 2022.”
When Musk was asked who he was leaning toward supporting for the 2024 presidential election, Musk responded, “DeSantis.”
Musk has a long history of supporting Democratic candidates but has become bitter toward the party because of their initiatives and because of attacks on his efforts to support free speech.
The Daily Wire reported that Musk has affirmed his support for the Republican Party “because of how Democrats have treated him.”
Musk tweeted:
“I support free speech, but not any one candidate,” Musk wrote on Twitter. “In fact, I gave money to & voted for Hillary & then voted for Biden. However, given unprovoked attacks by leading Democrats against me & a very cold shoulder to Tesla & SpaceX, I intend to vote Republican in November.”
Last month Musk noted that he would vote Republican in the upcoming election despite having “voted overwhelmingly for Democrats, historically.”
Doubling down, in an interview with the Daily Wire, Musk indicated that attacks from Democrats have prompted him to jump ship:
“I’m not sure, I might never have voted for a Republican, just to be clear,” Musk declared. “Now this election I will.”
Elaborating on his decision to walk away from the DNC, Musk said that Democrats were controlled by unions, which he argues is “just another form of monopoly” and “class-action lawyers.”
“In the past, I voted Democrat because they were (mostly) the kindness party. But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican. Now, watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold.”
Musk has also taken shots at both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. In May, Musk tweeted:
“Even though I think a less divisive candidate would be better in 2024, I still think Trump should be restored to Twitter. Biden’s mistake is that he thinks he was elected to transform the country, but actually, everyone just wanted less drama.”
Musk has made clear his thoughts on the Democratic view of big government. Musk told The Wall Street Journal: “Think of the government essentially as a corporation in the limit. The government is simply the biggest corporation, with a monopoly on violence and where you have no recourse.”
Perhaps DeSantis has caught Musk’s eye because, as CNN noted, the Florida Governor is “leading the crusade against wokeness,” a topic close to Elon’s heart. Earlier this year Musk said:
“[Wokeness] is a prevalent mind virus, and arguably one of the biggest threats to modern civilization. At its heart, wokeness is divisive, exclusionary, and hateful. It basically gives mean people a reason, it gives them a shield to be mean and cruel, armored in false virtue.”
