A Texas man was shot dead earlier this month by his ex-wife’s boyfriend as the divorced couple argued over child custody.
On Nov. 5, Chad Read, 54, appeared at the home of William Kyle Carruth on the 2100 block of 90th Street, in Lubbock, Texas, to pick up his children. One of the two boys was reportedly not at the home despite a court order saying the former husband gained custody at 3:15 p.m., according to a report in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
His ex-wife, Christina Read, told Chad Read she did not adhere to the court-ordered deadline because she wanted to see their son. The man’s new wife, Jennifer Read, filmed the encounter between her husband and his ex-wife using the camera on her mobile phone.
Jennifer Read’s video was released Wednesday when her attorney, Matthew Harris, sent local media a link to the two-minute video. The footage captured a confrontation between her husband and his ex-wife’s boyfriend that ended in the shooting death of her husband.
In the video, Kyle Carruth orders Chad Read to get off his property, while Read is demanding his ex-wife deliver his son because he was there at the court-ordered time.
Read tells his ex-wife he was supposed to have him at 3:15 p.m. During the argument, she informs her ex-husband the child was not at the 90th Street residence but she was going to fetch him.
She adds she did not abide by the court-ordered deadline because she wanted to see their son.
“I don’t care if you wanted to see him or not,” Chad Read said. “I get him at 3:15 p.m. If you want to see him, you see him up until 3:15.”
“You keep trying to keep my son from me,” Read said.
About that time, Kyle Carruth appears from inside his home armed with a rifle and yells at Read to leave. The two bump chests and Read dares Carruth to use his weapon.
“Do it,” Read can be heard saying.
Carruth fired a shot on the ground at Read’s feet while the two argued. Read grabbed the rifle barrel. During an ensuing struggle over the weapon, Read pushes Carruth, who is thrown off a few feet. After Carruth regains his footing, he spins around and fires twice at Read.
The video then focuses on Read, who has dropped to the ground while Jennifer Read is telling an unidentified person to call 911.

No charges or arrests have been made yet, according to the Lubbock newspaper.
The report added investigators surrendered their files to the Texas Attorney General’s Office. Lubbock County District Attorney Sunshine Stanek recused her office, reportedly because Carruth’s ex-wife, Anne Marie Carruth, is the judge for the 72nd District Court for Lubbock and Crosby Counties.
