Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) called the Rittenhouse verdict a message to armed vigilantes across the nation.
“America today: you can break the law, carry around weapons built for a military, shoot and kill people, and get away with it,” bemoaned Governor Newsome in response to an NBC Twitter post announcing the verdict.
Teenager Kyle Rittenhouse was tried for five felonies that included homicide and attempted homicide. He claimed he acted in self-defense and pleaded not guilty in his trial for the August 2020 shootings of three men during riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin last August. Civil unrest there followed news of a white police officer shooting Jacob Blake, a black man who became paralyzed after being shot seven times.
Two of the men Rittenhouse shot that night, Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber, died.
Rittenhouse reportedly fired an AR-15-style weapon eight times during the rioting. He fired four shots at Rosenbaum, who was unarmed. He fired two shots at an unknown person who kicked him. He fired one fatal shot at Anthony Huber, after he hit Rittenhouse with a skateboard. He fired his last shot at Gaige Grosskreutz, who was holding a gun, according to prosecutors.
The jury of seven women and five men deliberated for almost four days after two weeks of testimony before reaching their unanimous verdict of “Not Guilty” on all counts.
Rittenhouse broke out in tears and collapsed as the jury forewoman finished reading the verdicts to the court.
Newsom did not seem to accept the jury’s verdicts or perhaps thought the teen should have been wrongly convicted to send a message he would approve.
The California Democrat’s tweet lit a fire on Twitter as commenters heaped scorn and anger on him for what he said about the jury verdict.
The Daily Wire Editor Ben Shapiro threw Newsom’s words back at him, saying, “America today: you can lock down your entire citizenry while supping at the French Laundry, and then win two-thirds of a recall vote.”
California legislator Kevin Kiley chastised his state governor for attacking the Rittenhouse jurors.
Fox Nation host Tomi Lahren blasted the governor. “You’re talking about rioters & thugs who destroyed America all summer 2020 (and ravage your state on a daily basis) right?” asked Lahren on her Twitter account.
A commenter with the Twitter account @mcsoupman asked Newsom which law was broken, “Because the jury just decided he did not.”
Another user commented, “But, it’s OK for Antifa?”
CalExit founder @LouisJMarinelli responded, “You break the law every day and get away with it.”
“Every time you open your mouth, I’m even more grateful not to live in California,” commented bethanne2445, before asking Newsom, “Did that sound good in your head?”
The California Bail Agents Association posted this to their Twitter account: “Have you no shame, sir? Act like a Governor and bring people together.”
