Michigan Democrat state representative Jewell Jones was arrested and charged with a DUI, resisting arrest, and weapons possession, according to Fox News.
Police arrested Jones on April 6th after a vehicle collision.
His first court hearing was held on April 17 via a Zoom call because of COVID protocols.
The Detroit Free Press reports that the judge “released Jones … on a $15,000 personal bond … and ordered him to abstain from alcohol, illegal drugs, and recreational marijuana, submit to random drug and alcohol testing, and surrender to the Michigan State Police all weapons except those he needs for his Michigan National Guard duty.”
The 26-year-old politician’s blood-alcohol level was “allegedly twice the legal limit, Fox News reports.
Fox News states that Jones “resisted arrest when police arrived” and that “law enforcement also discovered a Glock in the glove compartment of his vehicle.”
Detriot Press Press reported: “State Rep. Jewell Jones was so confrontational after driving his vehicle into a ditch on I-96 while allegedly drunk that state troopers used a Taser and pepper spray on him, a prosecutor said Friday.”
Local 4 Detriot reports that Jones “continued to be confrontational uncooperative and using status of importance by flashing badges instead of the IDs being asked for by law enforcement.”
The Detroit Free Press stated that Jones has been charged with “resisting and obstructing a police officer, operating a motor vehicle with a high blood alcohol content, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, possession of a weapon while under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving.”
If found guilty, he faces a minimum sentence of 2 years.
Jones’ attorney says he is “presumed innocent” and will “continue to faithfully serve his constituents.”
