A Democratic congressional candidate proves once again that the West Coast is indeed the Left Coast. Her idea: Have a million homeless people break into empty homes and occupy them.
The candidate is Rebecca Parson. The Western Journal described her as a “socialist” who advocates “good ol’ fashioned breaking-and-entering.”
“Imagine I proposed a Housing for All Bill in Congress. Then imagine you, me, and a million of our friends took action and occupied empty houses nationwide. They couldn’t ignore us,” Parson says in her first political ad.
The political ad continues, “No one has ever done anything like this. That’s why it’s going to work.”
Her shocking statement is reminiscent of something the comical, bumbling character, Roy Bannon, said in the movie “Shanghai Noon”: “I don’t know Karate, but I do know crazy, and I will use it.”
Parson desires to represent Washington’s 6th Congressional District. She is running on a “Housing for All” platform, and, according to Fox News, is proposing to force Congress to enact a housing-for-all bill by encouraging a mass of homeless people to occupy empty residences they do not own.
No doubt, homelessness is a growing problem, and citizens want 2022 candidates to speak to the issue. Liberal government leaders in California and Washington have spent billions in recent years to fight homelessness. The Los Angeles Times reports that California has spent $4.8 billion in the last two years.
However, the problem remains and is increasing. Liberals want to throw more money at the problem — arguing that more equity-addressing social services (if not reparations) will solve the problem. Conservatives argue that what is needed is tighter controls and reductions in programming that, though well-intended, seem to support or enable bad behavior.
The Western Journal expressed its opinion of Parson’s recommendation:
“While this might be the most outrageous example of how socialism is theft that we’ve seen recently, it’s hardly the only example — and if America doesn’t quickly learn from the history of Marxist thought put into practice, we could be doomed to repeat it.”
Parson is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. She ran for the congressional seat in 2020 and finished third in the primary with 14 percent of the vote.
In a two-minute campaign ad, Parson also advocates a $30 minimum wage. The video shows Parson living in her Toyota Prius — flipping across radio stations and stopping when she hears a bulletin about housing prices being “unhinged from fundamentals.”
“You feel it, I feel it, we’re on the edge of collapse,” Parson says. “The corporate elite tell us not to worry. But what has doing what they told us ever gotten us?”
Parson laments: “I did what they told me. I went to college. I got a master’s degree. I ended up living in my car.”
The candidate then grabs a pair of bolt cutters and refreshes memories as to why they may remember her name: In 2020, when she was a spokeswoman for Tacoma Housing Now, she led a group to occupy empty buildings to force the government to increase spending.
While occupying 16 rooms at a Travelodge that was open for business, Parson and her group refused to pay, telling media at the time, “We paid for the first night, and now we’re demanding that the city and county pay for the other nights we’ve been here.”
Washington’s primary is scheduled for August 2, 2022.
