CNN’s declared pivot to objective journalism from hard-core liberal partisan media coverage has confused some viewers and angered many others.
Recent departures from the previously hard left-leaning network include Chris Cuomo, Brian Stelter, Jeff Zucker, Christi Paul and this week, Jeff Harwood.
The rapid release of so many entrenched have made viewers sit up and take notice. The trend back to the political center may mean Rachel Maddow’s days behind the red mic are numbered.
“CNN seems to be moving back more toward straight news and away from some of the blatant opinion-mongering by its anchors that characterized its past few years,” said Mark Feldstein, chairman of the broadcast journalism department at University of Maryland and a former CNN correspondent.
Retired CBS news anchor Dan Rather issued a bewildered question about changes he perceived at the network.
“What is going on at CNN?” Rather asked in a Friday Twitter post. “It’s a serious question. There is a lot of speculation on directives and motives. What’s really going on? And is it being noticed by the audience?”
Followers were quick to respond to Rather’s tweet, which garnered 121,000 likes by Saturday.
“It’s definitely being noticed and people are angry,” one Twitter user responded.
Former CNN sports reporter Keith Olbermann responded with a lengthy comment.
“It’s a long story but the new president is there to cut off the liberal heads,” Olbermann said, referring to new CNN CEO Chris Licht. “Not a coincidence that two ambitious on-air people tweeted the same GOP talking points about Biden and the Marines. This is the background on the new hatchet man – he tried the same stuff at MSNBC.”
“Dan Rather thinks CNN has an audience,” said talk show host Joe Pagliarulo in a Twitter post. “That’s cute, Dan.”
Conservative commentator Carmine Sabia claimed Rather picked winners and losers rather than providing plain news coverage. Sabia noted others acted similarly.
“John Hardwood did and that is why CNN fired him and why the tantrum of Fox Lite is trending,” Sabia stated. “When unfairness is your game, fairness appears unfair.”
Former die-hard CNN viewers described the other side of the story, expressing regret, uneasiness and a certain amount of anger at the new political moderation.
“It IS noticed by this member of the audience,” declared Yale professor Howard Forman in a sparsely viewed tweet. “CNN could soon become a parody of whataboutism and bothsidesism.”
Florida lawyer Pam Keith exclaimed, “CNN is gone full MAGA because a Trumper took control of it.” Keith was an unsuccessful Democratic candidate to represent Florida’s 18th Congressional District in the 2020 general election.
“CNN is dying a shameful death,” declared radio political analyst Ameshia Cross in a Twitter post. “They used to be a valid source. I grew up on the network. Today I’m ashamed of what they’ve become. And this weird pivot Right attacking Biden’s speech is the nail in their coffin. With few exception they sound Fox lite w/o the Fox viewership.”
