Representative Dan Crenshaw (R-Tex.) took to Twitter to share his views on the birthday celebration held for former President Barack Obama in Martha’s Vineyard over the weekend.
Crenshaw’s remarks: Days after photos leaked of Obama’s heavily attended birthday party, Crenshaw suggested sarcastically that he was grateful to them for setting the example that people should not comply with lockdown requirements.
How we got here: The Obamas received criticism last week when the media discovered that some 475 guests would be in attendance to celebrate Obama’s 60th birthday, as COVID-19 infections spiked due to the delta variant.
“This outdoor event was planned months ago in accordance with all public health guidelines and with COVID safeguards in place,” Hannah Hankins, a spokeswoman for Obama, said last Wednesday. “Due to the new spread of the Delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends.”
However, photographs and videos of the event that leaked over the weekend seemed to indicate that guests attended in large numbers, many of them without masks.
Crenshaw took this as an opportunity to suggest hypocrisy among Democrat politicians, who call for strict COVID-19 regulations, but then defy their own rules.
