The “Go woke, go broke” mantra proved true once again as CNN announced it was canceling its long-time progressive host Brian Stelter.
Amid plummeting ratings, CNN decided to cancel Brian Stelter’s “Reliable Sources” program. The last show will be Sunday, Aug. 21.
In June, Axios reported that new CNN CEO Chris Licht was pushing for the network to be less partisan in its coverage and warned staff that he would be monitoring comments to ensure they embraced a more objective reporting model.
CNN released a brief statement regarding discontinuing the “Reliable Sources” program.
“CNN will end its Reliable Sources program on Sunday, Aug. 21. As a result, Brian Stelter will leave the company. We appreciate his contributions to the network and wish him well as he embarks on new endeavors.”
The New York Post noted that “Reliable Sources was the longest-running show on the CNN.” Stelter anchored the program since 2013.
The announcement was celebrated on some conservative platforms.
Louder with Crower posted it’s “the best day ever.”
A Fox News post referred to Stelter as “one of mainstream media’s most outspoken critics of former President Trump” and noted the irony that “CNN executive vice president Amy Entelis called Stelter ‘an impeccable broadcaster,’ on his way out the door.”
Stelter, 36, noted that he was informed of his dismissal on Wednesday by CNN’s CEO, Chris Licht.
In a brief statement to NPR, Stelter said he would share additional details regarding his future during Sunday’s final episode.
“It was a rare privilege to lead a weekly show focused on the press at a time when it has never been more consequential,” Stelter said in his statement to NPR.
CNN correspondent Oliver Darcy described Stelter’s departure as the “end of an era.”
“It has been a hell of a ride working with @brianstelter and the @ReliableSources team over the last five years. Brian has been a first-class colleague, mentor, and friend. I cannot wait to see what he does next,” Darcy tweeted.
