Body language experts have weighed in on the appearance of the controversy-laden Meghan Markle at the send-off of Queen Elizabeth II.
While an entire nation mourns their beloved royal, the American celebrity turned Duchess of Sussex drew more than a little attention after not only appearing but also being an active participant in the proceedings of her recently passed grandmother-in-law.
Markle has drawn the ire of the British people for more than a few reasons, partially due to being credited as the driving force behind Prince Harry’s sudden disappearance from royal life and the couple’s break from the royal family as a whole.
To take things further, Markle has consistently made tell-all interviews bashing the royal family and borderline accusing them of racism and abuse. During one such interview, Meghan claimed that when she was pregnant with her son, Archie, Harry told her that the royal family had had “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”
The reactions to Markle’s return to the country weren’t exactly positive. While most British nationals were more focused on mourning the late queen, a few went out of their way to express their distaste for the American duchess.
Some expressed their frustrations during the proceedings, while others took to social media to do so, shown when #GoHomeMeghan began trending on Twitter.
This, when coupled with past experiences, led some to believe that Markle may have been feeling the pressure. Some body experts say Markle indicated feelings of tension between herself and members of the public.
“Meghan looked like a woman waiting for her cues rather than pushing herself forward,” body language expert Judi James told Page Six of the duchess’ appearance.
She pointed to the actress’ “frequent hair flicking” while she and her husband greeted well-wishers, behavior which “suggested some inner anxiety.”
It’s also uncharacteristic of the celebrity. Dr. Lillian Glass noticed a marked change between now and the last time she was in the UK when she was booed by crowds at the Queen’s platinum Jubilee in June, and just days before the queen’s passing the two were met with jeers and signs branding them “fake royals” at the One Young World Summit 2022.
“Usually, we have seen Meghan with a smile plastered on her face, whether it is appropriate or not,” she told the column.
“But this time, she actually seemed more genuine and humbled,” Glass said. “There is no question that she was in fear, as she hung on to Harry’s hand for dear life as they walked together. She was serious and even stood back when Harry was speaking to someone. Usually, she is front and center, but the fact that she hung back was very telling of her fear.”
James also pointed out that if body language is any indication there could be some weight to the rumors of an ongoing feud between the former royals and the current heirs to the throne, Prince William and Princess Kate.
“While William was a bit more cordial, he was still serious around [Meghan] and didn’t show his usual megawatt smile. Kate even refused to even look at Meghan or in her direction,” Glass noted. “She was being genuine. It was not in her heart to smile at Meghan, so she didn’t do it.”
Markle once accused Kate of making her cry during wedding preparations before the ceremony with Harry in 2018.
“Meghan, on the other hand, looked like a sad and desperate puppy as she tried to catch Kate’s eye gaze repeatedly. But Kate was having none of it,” she said.
