The White House could not back President Joe Biden’s claim that he used to drive an 18-wheeler, according to a recent report.
What he said: The president told workers at Mack Truck Lehigh Valley Operations that at one point in his life, he drove an 18-wheeler and that he had to.
“I used to drive an 18-wheeler, man […] I got to,” Biden is heard saying in audio recorded by local news channel WFMZ-TV.
Fact-check? The Republican National Committee (RNC) Research Twitter account shared the video and expressed skepticism about the veracity of Biden’s claim. The director of RN Research, Zach Parkinson, later shared screenshots of a 1973 opinion piece, which was written by then- first-term Sen. Biden, that talked about how he had ridden in a “47,000-pound cargo truck” on a 500-mile-plus trip from Delaware to Ohio.
“The extend of Biden’s trucking experience is that he **rode in** a truck once, for one night in 1973 (he made sure to return home by plane though),” Parkinson tweeted.
What the White House said: Fox News reached out to the White House to get clarification on Biden’s comments. The network reports that a spokesperson for the White House cited the 1973 article that Parkinson shared.
When the network pressed the spokesperson further, pointing out that the piece says he rode in the truck rather than drove it, the spokesperson for the White House pointed to a post on the United Federation of Teachers website that said Biden drove a school bus as a summer job.
Fox also noted that according to SchoolBusFleet.com, most school buses “have two axles, with the bigger models having two wheels on the front axle and four wheels on the dual axle, for a total of six wheels.”
The network then highlighted that most school buses have six wheels. The White House is yet to respond.
Biden toured the Mack Truck facility on Wednesday as part of his visit to Macungie, Lehigh County in Pennsylvania. During his address, the president announced that lawmakers and the White House reached a bipartisan agreement on the major issues in the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill that Republicans blocked earlier this month. The Senate later voted to advance the measures.
Biden also promoted the Buy American plan and called for more union jobs.
