Democrat President Joe Biden is set to ban the importation of Russian oil, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine late last month, which comes as the U.S. is facing skyrocketing gas prices.
“US to ban imports of Russian oil,” Bloomberg News reported. “White House announcement as soon as TODAY.”
The news comes as Fox News White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich claimed on Twitter on Tuesday morning that Biden himself had worked to stop a bipartisan bill to ban Russian oil.
“A source close to the process tells me that the House Ways and Means Committee worked all weekend in a bipartisan manner to develop a bill to ban all Russian oil imports and also remove PNTR (permanent normalized trade relations) from Russia, meaning that they would lose ‘most favored nation status’ on tariffs – but the President himself intervened to stop it,” she wrote on Twitter. “Sunday night, Ways and Means Democrats put out a press release about the bipartisan bill they were putting forward – but it was pulled down 5 minutes later.”
Heinrich claimed that the White House called Ways & Means Democrats and told them not to move forward on it but they decided they wanted to anyway.
“Someone from the White House called Pelosi’s office to intervene” last night, Heinrich continued, “She was ‘not moved by their arguments’ and her office told the WH staff they would be pushing ahead – so around 9:30 last night President Biden himself called Pelosi and asked her not to do it.”
The news comes as the national average price of gasoline set a new all-time record on Monday, blowing past the previous record that was set more than a decade ago in 2008.
“The national average price of gasoline in the U.S. today broke the existing record, rewriting the all-time high to today’s $4.104 per gallon,” GasBuddy reported. “The previous all-time high was set back in 2008 at $4.103 per gallon, just ahead of the U.S. Great Recession and housing crisis.”
GasBuddy, a platform that collects data on fuel prices to save consumers money, added that the price of diesel was “likely to break the record of $4.846 per gallon in the next two weeks.”
