Secret Service agents reportedly responded to a Saturday security scare near President Joe Biden’s Delaware beach home by whisking him off to a more secure location.
“Shortly before 1 p.m. today a privately owned aircraft entered the restricted airspace over Rehoboth Delaware after mistakenly entering a secured area,” U.S. Secret Service said in a statement. “The aircraft was immediately escorted out of the restricted airspace.”
“Preliminary investigation reveals the pilot was not on the proper radio channel, was not following the NOTAMS (Notice to Airmen) that had been filed and was not following published flight guidance,” agents explained. The statement added that the Secret Service will interview the pilot of the private plane.
“Rehoboth Beach police closed Rehoboth Ave after aircraft incursion reported over @POTUS beach house,” said independent journalist Alan Henney in a Twitter post.
“Update: President @POTUS moved to secure location after airplane enters airspace,” Henney added in a quick update to his first tweet. “Rehoboth Ave shutdown in area of firehouse.”
“Ironically GOP convention today at City Hall.”
The Delaware Republican Party’s State Convention began Friday evening. Saturday events included the state nominating convention for U.S. Representative, Attorney General, Auditor and Treasurer. It is unclear if the security response impacted the GOP nominating convention. A Saturday phone call to party headquarters for comment was not immediately returned.
Legacy media were present and provided some additional context to the developing event.
“REHOBOTH, Delaware- At 12:52pm, I saw @POTUS motorcade race into the Rehoboth Fire Station,” said CBS journalist Bo Erickson in a Saturday Twitter post. “I saw President Biden through the window of a SUV. Right before the motorcade, I saw 2 military jets flying low over the beach town.” Erickson noted that the press pool was not with the motorcade.
