President Joe Biden joked about “brave right-wing” Americans who think guns will be able to stop governmental overreach during a Tuesday speech in Pennsylvania.
Biden was at a campaign stop on his tour to promote the “Safer America” plan, yet another plan aimed at reducing second amendment rights, when he made the comments.
“For those brave right-wing Americans that say it’s all about keeping America, keeping America independent and safe, if you want to fight against the country, you need an F-15. You need something a little more than a gun,” said Biden.
“No I’m not joking, think about this, think about the rationale we used, that’s used,” he added.
Critics of the president were quick to respond on social media.
“The president has been saying this for years but it’s less and less congruent with how even his own administration has played out. How many F-15s did the Taliban have when Biden decided to surrender Afghanistan to them?” replied Stephen Gutowski.
“This is the logic of an authoritarian. ‘We have bombs and missiles, you wouldn’t stand a chance. Therefore surrender your puny guns.’ No,” responded congressional candidate Blake Masters.
“Pure provocation. We don’t need or want violence, we are going to defeat this regime at the ballot box, this is what they fear the most, that’s why are they are trying to provoke us. Don’t take the bait, engage at every level of the political process !” tweeted congressional candidate Joe Kent.
“Did the sitting President of the United States just say that he’s willing to turn the military on citizens?” asked one stunned listener.
It’s not the first time Biden’s made comments stating effectively the same message. In June 2021, he received pushback after saying that Americans would need “maybe some nuclear weapons” to fight against the U.S. government.
“The Second Amendment from the day it was passed, limited the type of people who could own a gun and what type of weapon you could own. You couldn’t buy a cannon. [Those who] say the blood of the, the blood of patriots, you know, and all this stuff about how we’re going to have to move against the government,” Biden said.
“Well, the tree of liberty is not [watered with] the blood of patriots, what’s happened is that there never been, if you want, if you think you need to have weapons to take on the government, you need F-15s and maybe some nuclear weapons. The point is that there’s always been the ability to limit, rationally limit, the type of weapon that can be owned, and who can own it,” he added.
