On Sunday, following the successful flight of SpaceX’s Inspiration4, Elon Musk made a quip on Twitter at the expense of United States President Joe Biden.
Musk’s comments: Musk spoke out on Sunday on Twitter in regards to the lack of acknowledgement from Biden on SpaceX’s successful three-day orbital mission last week.
The tweet from the SpaceX CEO was in response to a tweet from another user, which read: “The President of the United States has refused to even acknowledge the 4 newest American astronauts who helped raise hundreds of millions of dollars for St. Jude. What’s your theory on why that is?”
In reply, Musk wrote, simply, “He’s still sleeping.”
Presumably, Musk is drawing upon the characterization of Biden by former President Donald Trump as “Sleepy Joe.”
Another user posted a meme depicting a scene from the movie Alien where there is an alien hand over a human face. On the meme, the hand is labelled as “UAW,” the acronym for United Auto Workers union, and the face is labelled, “Biden.”
Replying to this post, Musk concurred, writing: “Seems that way.”
In context: The meme is likely a reference to a recent incident involving Musk and Biden, which centered around the fact that, despite his status in the industry, Musk did not receive an invitation to a summit hosted at the White House to discuss the future of electric cars in America.
However, because Tesla does not employ union workers, they were not invited to the event.
Other political leaders promptly congratulated SpaceX for the successful space flight.
Senator Bill Nelson, the 14th NASA Administrator, tweeted, “Congratulations, #Inspiration4! With today’s splashdown, you’ve helped demonstrate that low-Earth orbit is open for business.”
The big picture: Biden has been working with the UAW to gain their endorsement for the shift to more electric vehicles in the United States, despite the fact that the transition will likely result in layoffs for some union workers.
The $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill currently being debated in Congress and passionately supported by the Biden Administration includes an extra tax credit for electric vehicles manufactured by union employees.
If carried in the Senate, the bill would give companies like Ford and General Motors, which employ union workers, an edge over SpaceX, as it would not receive the tax credit.
