Fears mount as an Emmy Award-winning ABC News journalist remains missing after “heavily armed FBI agents” raided his home and seized his laptop, which reportedly contained “classified information,” according to the New York Post.
Rolling Stone reports that investigative reporter James Gordon Meek has not been seen since agents raided his apartment in April.
Meek is the producer of Hulu’s acclaimed documentary “3212 Un-redacted” and has broken several news stories which have proved embarrassing to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
According to the New York Post, his work includes reporting on the deaths of U.S. servicemen in Niger and “several high-profile national security and terrorism-related stories.”
The Post also noted that Meek’s attorney, Eugene Gorokhov, told Rolling Stone: “Mr. Meek is unaware of what allegations anonymous sources are making about his possession of classified documents.”
“If such documents exist,” Gorokhov said to Rolling Stone in a statement, “this would be within the scope of his long career as an investigative journalist covering government wrongdoing.”
Gorokhov continued:
“The allegations in your inquiry are troubling for a different reason: They appear to come from a source inside the government. It is highly inappropriate, and illegal, for individuals in the government to leak information about an ongoing investigation.”
Meek’s attorney concluded: “We hope that the DOJ promptly investigates the source of this leak.”
Meek, who worked for New York Daily News and ABC News, has been missing almost six months.
A spokesperson for ABC News told Rolling Stone: “He resigned very abruptly and hasn’t worked for us for months.”
Meek’s last tweet was on April 27. The one-word message simply read, “Facts.”
The tweet was likely in response to a post regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Rolling Stone noted that the FBI executed a search warrant that a federal magistrate judge approved in the Virginia Eastern District Court.
Because the Biden administration instituted a policy prohibiting federal investigators from seizing journalists’ records without authorization from the deputy attorney general, U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco was likely aware of the raid and what transpired.
The Justice Department declined to comment.
The Post reported that “ABC News staffers who worked with Meek told Rolling Stone that he ‘fell off the face of the Earth.’”
