In another embarrassing setback for Russia, Ukrainian thwarted a Chechnyan assassination team’s attempt to kill Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. A Ukrainian official reported that the team, sent by Russian President Vladimir Putin, was “destroyed.”
The report puts Russia in an exceedingly bad light: The assassination attempt was foiled, Russian spies tipped off Ukrainian officials, and Putin, who just last Wednesday said he wanted to pursue a diplomatic solution, is resorting to thuggery to accomplish his goals.
The move further unites much of the world against Russia. Only despot leaders in Iran, Chechnya, Belarus, China, and North Korea stand with Putin.
The National Review reports that Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, provided an update on Ukrainian television on Tuesday.
Danilov reported that Ukrainian officials received news of the planned assassination attempt on President Zelensky from agents of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB).
“I can say that we received information from representatives of the FSB, who today have no desire to take part in this bloody war,” said Danilov. With some satisfaction, Danilov said the Chechen special forces sent to kill Zelensky were “eliminated.”
“The Kadyrovites’ are an elite group, which came here specifically to eliminate our president, was directly destroyed,” Danilov claimed. The term Kadyrovites refers to a Chechen paramilitary group associated with numerous human rights violations and abuses.
According to the National Review, they are under the command of Razman Kadyrov, head of the Chechen Republic and a close ally of Vladimir Putin.
According to Insider, Danilov reported that the alleged assassins “were split into two groups, with one destroyed in the town of Hostomel, just northwest of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, and the other ‘under fire.'”
Even as the capital city came under fire, President Zelensky reportedly refused to leave Kyiv, famously stating, “The fight is here. I need ammunition, not a ride.” The Daily Wire reported.
On Tuesday, in record time, the European Parliament voted to accept Ukraine’s application to join the European Union (EU). The vote followed a powerful and emotional video speech by Zelensky.
The European Parliament responded to Zelensky’s speech with a standing ovation. Support from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia helped expedite Ukraine’s admission into the EU.
Zelensky painted Putin as the enemy of freedom during his speech, noting that Russia recently launched a missile strike in Kharkiv’s Freedom Square, killing 16 children. He said, “This is the price of freedom. We are fighting…for our land…and for our freedom…”
