The Biden administration’s “mixed messaging,” which has been called a “threat to national security” by several members of Congress, prompted seven Democratic senators to join Republicans in voting to overturn President Joe Biden’s mask mandate for toddlers.
Many in America are saying enough is enough — you can’t have maskless events at the White House and at the same time mandate masks for children — you can’t rail against a judge’s decision to revoke mask mandates on public transportation while declaring the pandemic is all but over so Title 42 should be repealed.
In a flicker of common sense in the often barren wasteland that is Washington, D.C., seven Democratic senators joined Republicans and overturned the Biden administration’s mask mandate for children in Head Start facilities.
The Tuesday vote was 55–41.
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, released this statement:
“Even though most Americans stopped wearing masks in almost every setting, children are still required to wear masks all day long in Head Start locations.”
Grassley continued: “Current HHS guidance demands that kids wear a mask even if they are outside, and even if they are as young as two years old. After two years, the last thing we need is to continue these outdated pandemic policies that are hurting kids’ educations.”
In the bipartisan vote, Democratic senators Catherine Cortez Masto, Nev., Mark Kelly, Ariz., Joe Manchin, W.V., Jon Ossoff, Ga., Jacky Rosen, Nev., Kyrsten Sinema, Ariz., and Jon Tester, Mont., supported the unanimous vote of Republicans present to overturn the Biden-pushed initiative.
The bill will now head to the House of Representatives.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, Head Start is a federal program providing support services for children from birth to age five. As of November 2021, masks are required for program participants age two and older.
Sen. John Thune, R-S.C., sponsored the bill. In an opinion article for Fox News earlier this week, he expressed that the mandate is unnecessary and “oppressive.”
“During the past year,” Thune wrote, “parents have risen up across the country to have their voices heard at the local, state, and federal levels. This groundswell of organization and involvement from parents has become too large for Democrat politicians to ignore any longer, and it has begun to turn the tide against these oppressive mandates.”
And the science seems to be on Thune’s side. Multiple studies have shown that COVID-19 poses an exceptionally low threat to children, mask mandates can be harmful to children, and masks are ineffective at preventing contracting the COVID-19 virus.
Expressing his concern for children and families negatively impacted by the draconian Covid protocols pushed by the Biden administration, Thune wrote:
“There is plenty of data, however, demonstrating the harm that has been done to the children of America during this pandemic. Students have fallen behind important benchmarks and had their behavioral development hindered. Young children are struggling with speech development and social skills. Parents don’t need to see the data, though. Many of them have been experiencing this reality firsthand.”
The Tuesday vote was the latest blow to the Biden administration’s COVID-19 policies.
Resist the Mainstream has reported that the administration has pushed-back against recent federal court rulings stating the administration has no legal authority to impose COVID protocols, such as transportation mask mandates, or unilaterally remove COVID-related safety measures, such as Title 42.
