Tragically, three young children have died after reportedly being found unconscious early Monday morning on the Brighton Boardwalk in Coney Island, New York.
NBC News reported that officers received a call from a “concerned family member” at approximately 1:40 a.m. Monday morning. The unknown caller indicated that the mother may have drowned her three children, according to the outlet.
In investigating the matter, officers visited an apartment where the father of one of the children echoed similar concerns about the mother.
Police located the mother of the children on the boardwalk. She was barefoot, wet and accompanied by some but not all of her children, reported NBC.
Following a large-scale search of the area, the mother’s other three children were found, alive but not responsive, on the cold shoreline at about 4:45 a.m.
The New York Post tweeted:
Sadly, lifesaving efforts could not revive the children. The New York Post reports a three-month-old girl, a four-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy were pronounced dead at Coney Island Hospital at 5:38 a.m.
The mother was reportedly not communicative with officers and has been taken into custody for questioning.
New York Police Department Chief Kenneth Corey reports no evidence of neglect before this incident. The mother will receive a psychiatric evaluation soon.
